Question: Math word problem with coins? help please!?

Paula has $1.50 in nickels and dimes. The total number of coins she has is 18. How many of each type of coin does she have? Please show me ALL of the steps to solve this problem with algebra and not with arithmetic.

X - number of nickels y - number of dimes 5x+ 10y= 150 x+ y= 18 y= 18-x Therefore: (replace 18-x with y) 5x+ 10(18-x)= 150 5x+ 180-10x= 150 5x-10x= 150-180 -5x= -30 x= 6 so you have 6 nickels 18-6= 12 so you have 12 dimes you have 6nickles and 12 dimes
