The First Spouse Gold Coins The United States is honoring our Nation 's first spouses by issuing one-half ounce $10 gold coins featuring their images, in the order that they served as first spouse. The United States Mint issues First Spouse Gold Coins on the same schedule as the Presidential $1 Coins issued honoring the Presidents. The 2009 First Spouse Gold Coins feature Anna Harrison Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk, and Margaret Taylor. The First Spouse Gold Coin obverse features portraits of the Nation 's first spouses, their names, the dates and order of their term as first spouse, the year of minting or issuance, "In God We Trust, " and "Liberty. " Each coin has a unique reverse design featuring an image emblematic of that spouse 's life and work, as well as the inscriptions "The United States of America, " "E Pluribus Unum, " "$10, " "1/ 2 oz. " and ".9999 Fine Gold. " They are not in circulation because at a half ounce of gold they are worth 500$ plus but only have a circulation price of ten bucks

They have a substantial amount of gold as part of their composition. That gold has a value substantially higher than the face value, $10. If you see one in circulation, pick it out ASAP. They are worth about $500 to $550 right now.

The US Mint set a limit of 40,000 coins for each spouse, and the first three (Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, and Thomas Jefferson 's Liberty) sold out within hours of issue. Since then the sales have tapered off drastically. Those first three issues will certainly be worth much more than the gold bullion value in the years to come. By the way, brass medals with the same design have also been issued for each spouse.
